Monte Alban
The Zapotec archaological site has been recognized as one of the world's cultural heritage sites and is a 15-minute bus ride away from Oaxaca City. Monte Alban is situated 300 meters above the valley floor and commands a spectacular view, particularly from the ridge on the northern end of the site. Naturalists have always found this sanctuary one of the best places for birding in the country. There are thousands of archaeological sites in the state of Oaxaca. Those interested in Monte Alban should also visit the nearby sites of San Jose Mogote, Mitla and Yagul.
Visit a museum
Oaxaca has some of the best museums in the country, which is quite natural, given the rich culture, history and archaeology that Oaxaca has. Must-sees include the Regional Museum at Santo Domingo, the Modern Art Collection and the Pre-hispanic art in the Rufino Tamayo Museum.
