Best Beaches
The beauty of Los Cabos begins with the coastline's secluded coves and long stretches of golden sand beaches. Seek out a true natural wonder with a boat trip to Lover's Beach, the only place on the continent where you can walk between the waters of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez.
While at Lover's Beach, be sure to visit the famous rock formation that creates a natural arch at Land's End. You may see dolphins frolicking in the waters or sea lions lounging on the rocks.
Right off the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas is the seemingly endless, beautiful Playa Medano. This two mile stretch of warm sands is the heart of the action, a great spot for people watching and watersports.
Other famous beaches in the region include Playa Costa Azul, where the brisk waves make it the choice of surfers, Playa Palmilla, Chileno, Santa Maria and Playa Buenos Aires. Beaches on the Sea of Cortez side of the peninsula have calmer waters and are safer for swimming than those on the Pacific Ocean.
Watersports
With its calm waters, fine weather and uncompromising beaches, its no wonder that water sports are one of the main attractions in Cabo San Lucas. Snorkelling, SCUBA diving, kayaking, water and jet-skis - what tickles your fancy? If it's water based, you can experience it in Cabo San Lucas! Windsurfing and waterskiing are great ways to spend warm sunny Baja days on the water. Glass bottom boats and wave runners can be fun ways to cross the bay from popular Playa Medano to Lover's Beach.
Diving & Snorkeling
The waters of San Lucas Bay are are home to a vast array of underwaters creatures and unique sites for some fabulous scuba diving. Divers of all skill levels enjoy the remarkable underwater world near Land's End at the tip of the peninsula. The visibility can range from 50 to over 100 feet. The underwater Sand Falls discovered by Jacques Cousteau may be a diver's most vivid memory of Los Cabos. The Sand Falls, a 90 foot dive off Pelican Rock, is where the current pulls tons of sand over an undersea ledge every second creating the underwater mirror image of a waterfall.
The calm waters of Santa Maria Bay, only 20 to 60 feet deep are fantastic for novice divers. The excellent visibility is great for anyone hoping to check out the ample marine life. This sheltered bay is home to sea turtles, sea bass, octopus, tropical fish and many other aquatic creatures.
In the very south of the Sea of Cortez, about 50 miles from Cabo is the amazing Cabo Pulmo. Cabo Pulmo is the only living coral reef on the western side of the continent. It is a must see for divers and snorkelers. This unique phenomenon is rich in marine life and a protected National Marine Sanctuary.
Whale Watching
From the Bering Strait, Whales migrate to the pacific coast of Baja California Sur between January and March of each year. To see the marvel of the great creatures, you'll need to visit 'in season'. There are 3 main areas where its best to view the whales - the main one being Magdalena Bay off the Pacific Coast. If you can't picture something that weighs 70, 000 pounds frolicking, you've never seen a gray whale leap majestically out of the water and splashing back in. A variety of boat trips and charters can take you to see the magnificent creatures surface to breathe and spray sea water into the air from their blowholes. Smaller boats can even get close enough so that you can pet the curious friendly whales, which just might be on a 'people-watching' tour of their own.
Horseback Riding
Just as adventurous, but requiring less stamina, horseback riding is another great way to take in all of the rich Old Baja California ambience. If you've never had the pleasure of riding a horse along a deserted beach, don't wait a minute longer. It's an experience not to be missed!
